Naim's fantastic Muso speaker - and four other hi-fi alternatives

Written By Unknown on Thursday 1 May 2014 | 08:19

It's time to get rid of that amp and big hi-fi in your living room and replace it with a simple soundbar or speaker system that will deliver a big sound without all the clutter.

Here are five great systems that will have you blasting out tunes not only in your living room but your whole house as well.

Naim Muso - £849

The Muso boasts 450 watts of power from six 75-watt digital amplifiers, meaning it can act as your main hi-fi system as well as link to other Naim systems to create a multi-room system. The Muso provides playback of 24bit/192kHz high-resolution music, and it supports a range of audio formats including WAV, FLAC, and AIFF, and more.

Connectivity options include AirPlay, Universal Plug 'n' Play, Bluetooth, and more, and the speaker offers native support for streaming services and internet radio and inputs for digital, USB, and 3.5mm.

Sonos Playbar - £599

The ultimate connected soundbar, the Sonos Playbar does not require a subwoofer (although you can add one) or speaker wire, and easily fits into any room and setup.

Its built-in sensors help the Playbar automatically adjust EQ and channel orientation so it can lie flat on the TV stand or rotate for low profile wall-mounting above or below the TV.
Under the hood, Playbar gets its punch from nine individually amplified speakers: six mid-woofers and three tweeters.

Connectivity is all through a mesh network that you set-up alongside the device and that means your Apple or Android device merely act as a remote control to services like Spotify or Napster.

Those looking to get the most from the Sonos system can add additional zones from £169, or a beefy wireless subwoofer for another £599.

Bowers & Wilkins Panorama 2 - £1649

If you really want to push the budget you can opt for the Bowers & Wilkins Panorama 2 soundbar.

Inside the bar, there are nine drive units in total: five used for the centre speaker, two subwoofers, two mid-range drivers, and an aluminium dome tweeter which features the firm's Nautilus tube-loaded technology.

There are three HDMI inputs on the Panorama 2 and one output, so it can serve as an entertainment hub/switcher. You can also add a separate subwoofer to really broaden the soundfield.

Bowers & Wilkins has also improved the on-screen display for the unit, and there's now a proximity sensor on the front which illuminates a control panel when you reach for it.
Sadly however for fans of streaming music services, the Panorama 2 doesn't have an internet connection.

Onkyo Soundbars - from £299

Onkyo has three soundbars and boxes to suit your needs and to save the living room from the poor-quality speakers built-in to your TV.

The so-called TV base speaker system is a more compact package than you'd expect, ideal for adding to your current TV, without the bother of having to either wall-mount or create a typically soundbar-shaped space to fit it into.

The Onkyo LS-T10 is a designed to sit under your TV bringing with it six full-range drivers as well as a 21w subwoofer.

For the more traditional Soundbar style, Onkyo offer the LS-B40 and LS-B50. The LS-B50 is the big brother of the package, with a separate wireless 40w subwoofer, and six full-range drivers and two tweeters built into the bar. The LS-B40 offers two bass woofers, four drivers and two tweeters all in the single package.

All of the models offer the convenience of Bluetooth connectivity, so as well as boosting your TV's sound quality, you can pair with your phone to play your favourite tunes.

Samsung Shape - £329

The Samsung Shape M7 wireless speaker system wants to take over your house with a multi-speaker set-up and replace Sonos at the same time.

The M7 speaker can be positioned both vertically and horizontally, looking like a wedge of cheese either way. The M7 supports Bluetooth, NFC and Wi-Fi. If you're only using one speaker you can connect over Wi-Fi to stream music.

As for audio quality, Samsung says the Shape M7 has a Foam Core Woofer, CNT pulp cone mid-range speakers, and silk dome tweeters with advanced speaker enclosures for "the perfect combination for delivering deep, precise bass reproduction and crisp, clean mid- and high ranges".

Streaming services supported include your own music library, Amazon, Pandora, Rhapsody, TuneIn Radio, and others.
