Governor of East Java, Soekarwo plans to build Surabaya's largest
red-light district known as Dolly and turn it into a family friendly
zone equipped with public facilities including places of worship. The
East Java's prostitution site will be closed on June 19, 2014.
Soekarwo is determined to close the largest red-light district in
Southeast Asian region, as part of efforts to help curb the rapid spread
of HIV/AIDS. He is in coordination with Surabaya's municipal government
to proceed with the plan.
The provincial government pledges to facilitate Surabaya government
with training fund and housing allowance for former commercial sex
workers. While Mayor of Surabaya, Tri Rismaharini has prepared some
plans after the closing. People are still allowed to stay in Dolly but
any prostitution activity is outlawed.
"We will create new jobs for them," Rismaharini stated.
