Kutoarjo - The
old Chinese house, located at Jalan Pangeran Diponegoro 59, Kutoarjo,
stands out between other buildings at the heart of the city.
The wooden
green shingles cover the front of the building. The sign says, "King
lompong cake for sale."
Inside the building, rectangular cakes wrapped by dry banana leaves
were diplayed on a table. The black-colored sweet and spongy cake is
called lompong cake, a dish from Kutoarjo, Purwerejo, Central Java.
Basic ingredients for the cake include taro stem leaves, or locally
known as lompong; merang flour (made of paddy stem); sticky rice flour;
sugar cane; and peanuts, which are added as stuffings for the cake.
Lompong cake shops are easy to find in Kutoarjo. The cake itself is
sold for Rp 2,000. However, one particular shop charges a little bit
higher for the cake, which is Rp 3,500 each.
"The ingredients' quality is our main concern, and we don't use
preservatives," said Ruth Sarijani Gondo Santoso, the owner of the King
shop.
Ruth said she inherited the business from her ancestors. According to her, King lompong cake has existed since 1930.
Every day, Ruth can produce 10 kilograms of lompong cakes. The
customers, who mostly came from Semarang, Yogyakarta and Magelang, often
bought lompong cake as a gift for their friends or relatives living in
foreign countries such as Singapore, the United States, and Germany.
