South Korean electronic giant Samsung hit 86 million smartphone sales in the last quarter of 2013.
The number continued Samsung's run as the top seller of smartphones, far beyond its major competitor Apple.
Strategy Analytics research, as cited by Reuters, wrote that Samsung took 29.6 percent of the global smartphone market in the last quarter. Meanwhile, Apple sits at second with 17.6 percent, selling 51 million units. Apple's drop in the market was also caused by the rise of two other factories, Huawei and Lenovo.
Huawei booked 16.6 million sales and Lenovo 13.6 million sales in the same quarter. Linda Sui, analyst from Strategy Analytics, stated that both Samsung and Apple will have to work hard to maintain their market share in 2014 as other brands catch up.
Overall in 2013, smartphone sales jumped 41 percent, reaching 990 million units. Samsung in total sold 319.8 million units and had 32.2 percent of the market, while Apple was at second with 15.5 percent.
