Jakarta - Papua
Governor Lukas Enembe stated that the string of shooting incidents in
Puncak Jaya were purely an act of crime without any political interest
as often reported.
Lukas mentioned that the crime was not meant to fight
for independence as the culprits never proposed any demand.
"Therefore I have requested the Papua Chief of Police to perform
legal enforcement," he said, after meeting with President Susilo Bambang
Yudhoyono.
Lukas mentioned that as a governor, he has attempted to reconcile with several areas where conflicts occur.
"I, alongside the Papua Chief of Police and superior officer of the army, have met with our crossed brothers," said Lukas.
He also admitted that there are indeed conflicts in Papua. However,
these conflicts were often driven by local issues, such as regional
election, instead of the act insurgency.
