The 269th Anniversary of Solo City, scheduled to take place on
February 17, 2014, will be enlivened by a traditional food festival
which is locally known as Festival Jenang Solo.
During the festival,
dozens of traditional food will be exhibited at Ngarsapura Hall.
The festival organizing committee Heru Prasetyo, said that the committee will not only exhibit jenang (traditional porridge) in the festival, but also involve 50 cooks from a number of hotels to demonstrate how to cook the dish.
"We will also demonstrate how to prepare it," said Heru on Wednesday, February 12, 2014.
Jenang is closely related to the people's life in Solo. The food has
become the main meal served in a feast or communal gathering. As jenang
tradtion fades away, Heru said, the festival is held to bring back
jenang into the people's life.
In the festival, the committee will serve 17 types of Jenang, such as
jenang sumsum, jenang lemu, jenang merah and others. Based on a record,
the 17 types of jenang has been served during boyong kedhaton, a ceremonial occasion to commemorate the palace relocation from Kartasura to Surakarta in 1745.
