Observers: Jokowi-Prabowo's meeting end sabotage rumors

The meeting between President-elect Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and ex-Presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto on Friday put an end to rumors about attempts to disrupt the presidential inauguration next Monday, a political observer has said.

"We need to appreciate the meeting between the two leaders as it sets an example that needs to be followed because it has put an end to rumors that there might be an attempt

to thwart the inauguration of President-elect Jokowi and Vice President-elect Jusuf Kalla (JK) on October 20, 2014," political observer Nicolaus Pira Bunga of the University of Nusa Cendana (Undana), Kupang, said here on Saturday (18/10).

Nicolaus made the remarks in response to rumors that the presidential inauguration would be held at night to avoid a threat to disrupt it.

"There is a special scenario to organize the inauguration at night to reduce the public's participation," Research Center Pusaka Trisakti Chairman Rian Andi Soemarno said in Jakarta.

There have been discussions about organizing the inauguration at night to avoid undesired acts, he said.

"There is the potential for the inauguration to be canceled and for there to be a power vacuum. If the Constitutional Court fails to construe the meaning of several crucial articles in MD3 Law, then some could use them to force their will to postpone the inauguration on October 20," he said.

According to Pria Bunga, the situation stabilized after Jokowi met with Prabowo, which hints that the inauguration will proceed smoothly, and that there is no need to dramatize it.

Earlier, Head of the National Intelligence Agency (BIN) Lieutenant General Marciano Norman said there had not been any information on efforts to thwart the presidential inauguration of Joko Widodo.

"Based on intelligence data, there has not been any effort to thwart the presidential inauguration," Marciano stated during his visit to the People's Consultative Assembly in Jakarta on Thursday.

Chairman of the assembly Zulkifli Hasan, as well as Deputy Chairmen Oesman Sapta Odang, Mahyudin, and EE Mangindaan, met with Police and Military delegates, including TNI Commander General Moeldoko and Police Chief General Sutarman.

They discussed security preparations for the inauguration of President Joko Widodo and Vice-President Jusuf Kalla.

Marciano noted that his agency has coordinated with several security agencies to maintain a peaceful atmosphere.

"Our efforts will be to ensure a successful inauguration day, as awaited by all Indonesians," Marciano added.

The Intelligence Head reminded the leaders of the assembly to arrive at the inauguration venue in time to avoid delays.

"What we are worried about is the availability of the Chairman and Deputy Chairmen of the assembly. They must not be late for the event as it might create issues, such as intercepting or some other negative efforts. So please don't come late, maintain your health and don't fall sick," Marciano remarked.

Joko Widodo and Jusuf Kalla will be sworn in at the People's Consultative Assembly complex on Monday, Oct 20.

After his inauguration, Jokowi will deliver a 7-minute speech and meet state leaders at a banquet in the assembly building.
