The Indonesia National Army (TNI) will deploy 31,370 personnel to
guard the presidential election on Wednesday, July 9, 2014.
The TNI
personnel will be put under the command of the Indonesia National
Police. "They will be put on standby in every district, region, and
central bases," said Chief of Information for TNI Headquarters Brigadier
General Andika Perkasa yesterday.
According to Andika, the number is still insufficient to secure the
election nationwide. Therefore, he commands every soldier to remain on
alert.
In West Java, 7,720 TNI personnel were deployed to secure the
election. The Chief of Siliwangi Military District III Major General
Dedi Kusnadi, said that the army will not wait for the police if riots
break out. Quick measures will be taken if the police are far away from
the scene.
"That is the order from the TNI Joint Chief of Staff. Do not hesitate to assist the police," said Dedi in Bandung yesterday.
The West Java District Police will deploy 21,109 personnel. In
addition to getting assistance from the TNI, the Police will receive
assistance from 15,000 civilian security personnel.
Chief of West Java District Police Inspector General M. Iriawan, said
that they will not hesitate to strike anyone who tries to cause anarchy
and riots during the presidential election.
In Jakarta and its surrounding areas, 16,754 police personnel have
been deployed since last week. While in East Java, 2,917 police
personnel have been mobilized to conflict-prone areas such as Madura,
Bangkalan, Sampang, Pamekasan and Sumenep.
