At least 31 people were killed and 90 others wounded following bomb attacks on a street market in Xinjiang, China, today.
Associated Press, quoting Xinhua, reported that the assailants on two SUVs plowed through shoppers while setting off explosives. One of the cars threw the bomb while the other one exploded.
A witness said to have heard dozens of explosions from the two cars. Images posted to popular Chinese social media site showed at least three people lying on a street with a large fire in a distance.
The Xinjiang regional government said in a statement that the attack was "a serious violent terrorist incident of a particularly vile nature."
It was unclear who was responsible for the attack. But the government frequently blamed the extremists from Xianjiang's native Turkic Uighur Muslim ethnic group. Human rights activists said the incident was encouraged by cultural oppression against Uighur Muslims.
