Research on financial cyber threats in 2013 conducted by Kaspersky
Lab, shows financial malwares that target Bitcoins have become more
popular last year.
The number of attacks on the crypto-currency has
increased more than 2.5 times and had reached the total of 8.3 million
incidents.
"In 2013, Bitcoin value has increased more than 85 times and this
certainly has attracted the attention of cyber criminals. Until the end
of 2013, the number of users who had been attacked by malwares that
targeted Bitcoins has started to catch up with the number of users who
had been attacked by more conventional banking cyber threats," said
Sergey Lozhkin, Senior Security Researcher, Kaspersky Lab, in a release
that Tempo received last Thursday.
Tools that cyber criminals use to steal Bitcoins could be divided
into two categories. The first category covers programs that have been
created to steal "wallet" files. The second one consists of applications
that have been designed to install softwares that "mining" Bitcoins
from computers that have been infected.
