Five students from Brawijaya University have created an innovative
pizza made from avocado seeds, called the Avocado Seed Pizza
(Avos-Pizza). The students claim the pizza can reduce the impact of
obesity and diabetes.
The five students are Presticia Rosa Indri Wardani, Diyah Ayu
Safitri, Yuni Basuki, and Sumini from the Faculty of Agriculture, and
Afifah Puji Hastuti from Faculty of Technology Agriculture.
Presticia said the idea to create the Avos-Pizza came from the fact
that Indonesia still imports flour and the amount of imported flour
continues to rise each year. They became concerned about this situation
because Indonesia is actually rich in raw materials that can be used to
make flour.
"We chose avocado seeds as a substitute for wheat flour because they are high in starch, water, and minerals," Presticia told Tempo.
The students produced their own avocado seed flour using a
simple process that takes approximately a week. The process of turning
the flour into pizza can take up to 6 to 7 hours. In order to help the
avocado flour rise in order to make the pizza they still need to use a
small amount of wheat flour.
Afifah added that Avos-Pizza is the first innovative pizza in
Indonesia that is made from avocado seeds. They claim the pizza is
healthier because it can reduce the impact of obesity and diabetes.
Afifah and her friends also use low calorie sugar in the Avos-Pizza.
For the meantime, the Avos-Pizza can be enjoyed with two types of
toppings including mixed vegetable and mixed chicken. The cost of the
Avos Pizza is Rp5,000 per box with each box containing two medium sized
pizzas.
The students were able to execute their idea for the Avos-Pizza after
receiving funding from the Higher Education Directorate General through
the Student Business Creativity Program (PKM-K)
